Kia

Kia Corporation is a South Korean automotive manufacturer founded in 1944, originally as a manufacturer of bicycle parts and steel tubing. The company produced its first domestic automobile, the Brisa, in 1974, but faced bankruptcy in 1997 during the Asian financial crisis. Hyundai Motor Company acquired a controlling stake in 1998, and the two companies now share platforms, engines, and technology while maintaining separate brand identities.

Kia entered the U.S. market in 1992 with inexpensive, basic vehicles that competed primarily on price. Like Hyundai, early Kia models suffered from quality concerns and were positioned as budget alternatives. The Sephia and Sportage of the 1990s were functional but unremarkable, and the brand struggled with a low-quality image.

The brand's transformation began in earnest when Peter Schreyer, formerly of Audi and Volkswagen, joined as chief design officer in 2006. He introduced the now-iconic "tiger nose" grille and elevated Kia's design language significantly. Models like the Optima (K5), Sorento, and Soul featured distinctive styling that differentiated them from the conservative designs dominating the segment. The Soul, in particular, became a design icon and sales success with its boxy, urban-friendly character.

Kia adopted Hyundai's warranty strategy and quality improvements while carving out its own identity with sportier styling and features. The brand has won numerous design awards and consistently improved in reliability rankings. The Stinger sport sedan, introduced in 2017, showcased Kia's ambition to compete with performance-oriented European brands. The Telluride SUV, launched in 2019, became an immediate success and won numerous accolades including being named the 2020 World Car of the Year.

Recently, Kia has repositioned itself as a design-forward, technology-driven brand, even dropping the "Motors" from its name and introducing a modern new logo in 2021. The EV6 electric vehicle earned widespread praise for its design and performance. Kia now competes as a mainstream brand offering strong value, attractive styling, comprehensive features, and a compelling warranty, successfully shedding its budget-brand origins.
