Mazda
Mazda Motor Corporation is a Japanese automotive manufacturer founded in 1920 as a cork manufacturing company before transitioning to machinery and eventually automobiles. The company, based in Hiroshima, began producing vehicles in the 1930s and adopted the Mazda name in 1984 (previously known as Toyo Kogyo). Unlike larger Japanese manufacturers, Mazda has remained relatively independent, though Ford held a controlling stake from 1996 to 2015.
Mazda built its reputation on engineering innovation and driving dynamics. The company became the only manufacturer to successfully mass-produce rotary engines, which powered iconic models like the Cosmo Sport (1967) and RX series. The RX-7 sports car (1978-2002) and RX-8 (2003-2012) became legendary among enthusiasts for their high-revving, smooth rotary powertrains and excellent handling, though fuel consumption and reliability concerns limited broader appeal.
The MX-5 Miata, introduced in 1989, revived the affordable roadster segment and became the best-selling two-seat sports car in history. Its focus on lightweight design, balanced handling, and driving enjoyment—even with modest power—epitomized Mazda's "Jinba Ittai" (horse and rider as one) philosophy. The Miata remains in production and continues to influence the brand's sporty image.
In recent years, Mazda has distinguished itself from mainstream competitors through its "Kodo" design language, featuring flowing lines and premium aesthetics, and its SkyActiv technology platform emphasizing efficient naturally aspirated engines, lightweight construction, and responsive driving dynamics. While rivals rushed to turbocharged engines, Mazda refined traditional gasoline powertrains and developed proprietary compression-ignition gasoline technology.
Mazda has positioned itself as an alternative to volume manufacturers, focusing on driving engagement and upscale presentation rather than competing on price or features. Models like the Mazda3, CX-5, and CX-9 offer premium-feel interiors and engaging handling at accessible prices. As a smaller independent manufacturer, Mazda emphasizes quality over quantity, building a loyal following among drivers who prioritize the experience over practicality or status.
